Do You Need a Water Chiller for DWC or RDWC?

The answer: No, not automatically.

A chiller becomes useful when you have a recurring reservoir heat problem that room cooling, shading the reservoir, and reducing equipment heat cannot control.

Why

Here’s how I make the decision.

If your reservoir stays around 68 to 72°F with good aeration and healthy roots, I would not buy a chiller.

At 73 or 74, I’m watching it.

Around 75°F, I start correcting the heat.

If it repeatedly reaches about 77°F or higher, and room cooling, shading the reservoir, and reducing equipment heat cannot bring it down, that’s where I want a chiller.

Those are operating decision points, not biological cliffs.

First, warmer water has a lower oxygen-holding capacity. Roots need oxygen for normal function and nutrient uptake. Your air pump adds oxygen, but it does not remove that temperature limit. If you measure dissolved oxygen, above about 6 ppm is a useful hydroponic target.

Second, low oxygen stresses the root zone and can favor root disease.

Third, warmer conditions can favor some Pythium species that cause root rot. In a controlled hydroponic study, researchers found more severe root rot at warmer nutrient-solution temperatures.

That does not mean 77°F causes root rot. The pathogen still has to be present. But now you’re stacking risk: less oxygen capacity, a greater risk of root stress, and conditions that can favor some Pythium.

So a chiller is not mandatory DWC equipment. It becomes valuable when you have a recurring heat problem you cannot control another way.

A chiller controls temperature. Your air system supplies oxygen. You may need both.

Tiny refrigerator, very specific job.
