How Much Air Does DWC Need?
Six is a practical hydroponic benchmark, not a proven cannabis-specific cutoff.

Why
That's dissolved oxygen, or DO. Six is a practical hydroponic benchmark, not a proven cannabis-specific cutoff. Seven to eight is a strong reading. At 68 degrees Fahrenheit and sea level, air-saturated freshwater holds about 9.1 milligrams per liter.
No DO meter? A rough sizing rule, not a DO standard, is half to one liter per minute of rated airflow per gallon of actual water. Use the water you actually run, not the bucket label. Four gallons? A pump rated around four liters per minute is a practical example. Four four-gallon buckets? Roughly fifteen to twenty liters per minute gives some headroom. These are examples; depth, tubing, backpressure, and air-stone resistance reduce delivered airflow.
Recirculating deep-water culture, or RDWC, is different. Total water volume is only a starting point because circulation moves oxygenated water through the system. Flow alone doesn't create oxygen; splashing returns or a venturi pulling in air can increase oxygen transfer. With a DO meter, compare the control reservoir with a far grow bucket. If it reads much lower, circulation or distribution may be the problem, not just pump size.
And more air is not automatically better. With normal aeration, the concern usually isn't too much dissolved oxygen. It's diminishing returns and unnecessary root-zone agitation. One hydroponic study found no growth benefit once DO stayed above about 6, and growth fell at the highest aeration rate. Other research found agitation can interfere with nutrient uptake in some crops. That doesn't establish a cannabis maximum. Roots need oxygen, not a hot tub.
If your system relies on air stones, run them continuously. If DO is low, check water temperature, air-stone condition, restrictions, and distribution before buying a bigger pump.
What to remember
- Use the water you actually run, not the bucket label.
