Where Should the Water Level Be in DWC?

The answer: About one inch below the net pot.

This applies once established roots reach the nutrient solution. Seedlings and fresh clones may need a higher starting level.

Why

For the bucket setup shown here, keep the water about one inch below the lowest point of the net pot once established roots reach the nutrient solution. That air gap keeps the upper root zone humid and exposed to oxygen while submerged roots receive continuously aerated solution. Seedlings and fresh clones are the temporary exception and may need a higher starting level until roots reach the water. In RDWC designs that use an adjustable standpipe, that standpipe controls the operating level, while a float valve or top-off system maintains volume. Check the level with the system running, and use a spare empty net pot to see the gap easily.

What to remember

  • For this bucket setup, keep the water about one inch below the bottom of the net pot once established roots reach the solution.
  • The air gap leaves upper roots in a humid, oxygen-rich zone while submerged roots receive continuously aerated nutrient solution.
  • Seedlings and fresh clones may need a temporarily higher level until roots reach the solution; then lower it gradually.
  • In RDWC designs that use an adjustable standpipe, that standpipe sets the operating level. A float valve or top-off system maintains solution volume.
  • Check the system while it is circulating and measure from the lowest point of the net pot.
  • A spare empty net pot makes the water line easy to see without disturbing a plant.
