What Is VPD and Does It Really Matter?

The answer: Yes, but do not chase it.

Keep temperature and humidity in safe, stage-appropriate ranges, then use VPD to fine-tune how they work together.

Why

VPD stands for vapor pressure deficit. It describes drying demand based on temperature and humidity. Air VPD uses air temperature. Leaf-to-air VPD uses actual leaf temperature, making it more relevant to the plant.

VPD helps drive transpiration. Too low, and transpiration can slow. Too high, and the plant may lose water faster than the roots can replace it, then partially close its stomata, limiting carbon dioxide uptake, cooling, and growth.

At 60 percent relative humidity, air VPD is about 1.2 kilopascals at 75 degrees and 1.6 at 85. Same humidity, very different demand.

Temperature and humidity come first because those are what you control. Keep temperature appropriate and avoid condensation or prolonged excessive humidity, especially in flower. Then fine-tune VPD inside that safe window. Do not create a different problem just to make a chart happy.

Measure temperature and humidity with a calibrated sensor at canopy height in representative airflow, away from direct light, mist, walls, and vents. You can spot-check several leaves with an infrared thermometer for leaf-to-air VPD. The Grow Pops VPD Calculator linked in my profile calculates both when leaf temperature is provided. It compares temperature and humidity changes within the working limits you enter, or recommends leaving the room alone.

Common cannabis starting bands are roughly 0.4 to 0.8 kilopascals for clones, 0.8 to 1.2 for veg, and 1.0 to 1.5 for flower. They are starting points, not commandments.

First bring temperature into range. If VPD is high, compare lowering temperature within range with raising humidity within its limit. If it is low, compare raising temperature within range with removing humidity. If neither choice stays inside your limits, do not force the target. Make one small change, stabilize, and measure again.

In DWC or RDWC, also check roots, aeration, solution temperature, reservoir level, and EC. A full reservoir does not guarantee enough water is reaching the leaves.

The correction is working when VPD returns to range without condensation or worsening plant stress, and reservoir use and EC still make sense. Watch the trend, not every short swing.

What to remember

  • Temperature and humidity come first because those are what you control.
  • If neither choice stays inside your limits, do not force the target.
