Should a DWC Air Pump Run 24 Hours a Day?

The answer: Yes.

Run it continuously. Root respiration continues when the lights are off, so DWC and RDWC roots still need dissolved oxygen all night.

Why

Run a DWC or RDWC air pump continuously, 24 hours a day. The plant's lights may turn off, but root respiration does not. Roots continue using oxygen to produce ATP for maintenance, growth, and nutrient uptake. At lights-off, photosynthesis stops and transpiration and water demand usually fall, but the root system still needs dissolved oxygen. Warmer nutrient solution also holds less dissolved oxygen than cooler water, so reservoir temperature and aeration work together. Cooling the reservoir does not replace aeration, and aeration does not replace temperature control.

What to remember

  • Run the DWC or RDWC air pump continuously, 24/7.
  • Root respiration continues during the dark period even though photosynthesis stops.
  • Oxygen supports ATP production used for root maintenance, growth, and nutrient uptake.
  • Lights-off can reduce transpiration and water uptake, but it does not eliminate root oxygen demand.
  • Warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen than cooler water.
  • Reservoir cooling and aeration are separate jobs; you want both working properly.
