How Can You Tell If Your Cannabis Has Root Rot?

The answer: Soft, slimy, deteriorating roots.

Brown color alone can be nutrient staining. Look for tissue breakdown, not just a color change.

Why

Brown roots alone do not diagnose root rot. In DWC and RDWC, nutrient staining can leave healthy roots brown while they remain firm and actively growing. Root rot becomes more likely when roots are soft, deteriorating or slimy, outer tissue slips off, root tips are damaged, or new root growth slows. Pythium damage can cause root tissue to slough off and leave a thin, string-like center called rat-tailing, which is a stronger sign than color alone. These signs overlap with other root problems. Appearance alone does not identify a particular pathogen. Canopy symptoms may appear late, so inspect the roots directly.

What to remember

  • Brown or dark roots alone are not diagnostic.
  • Soft, slimy, or deteriorating root tissue is a stronger warning sign.
  • Outer root tissue slipping off and leaving a thin inner strand is called rat-tailing.
  • Dead or damaged root tips and reduced new root growth strengthen the case for root rot.
  • RDWC circulation can spread pathogens such as Pythium through the system.
  • Do not wait for leaf symptoms; serious root damage can develop before the canopy looks obviously sick.
