Can a Tiny Light Leak Ruin Your Cannabis Grow?

The answer: Not necessarily.

Block the source, check your timer, and stay on your normal schedule.

Why

If you just found one during flower, take a breath. Block the source, check your timer, and stay on your normal schedule.

Photoperiod cannabis uses the length of its dark period as a signal to flower. Repeated light during that time can interfere with that signal.

In a controlled study, seven cannabis cultivars received very dim light throughout each dark period. Some flowered later, developed flowers more slowly, and kept stretching longer. Others were less sensitive. Risk depends on how much light reaches the plant, for how long, and how often, not just the size of a hole. The study didn't test one accidental opening or follow plants to harvest, and it doesn't prove leaks cause male flowers.

With the grow light on, check outside for glowing seams, zippers, vents, and cable ports. That shows light escaping, not how much gets in during darkness. Block visible light paths at seams, zippers, and ports, and baffle vents without closing off airflow. Cover indicator lights shining toward the plants, and verify the timer keeps the grow light off throughout the dark period.

Between grows, or if you can fit inside your planted tent, briefly turn the grow light off during normal lights-on hours. Recreate the brightest outside light it faces during scheduled darkness, including daylight if that's your schedule, and check at plant height. An outward check cannot certify a safe level. Even zero on an ordinary PPFD meter doesn't prove zero light at the plant.

After the fix, let the grow continue on its normal schedule. Watch whether buds keep building and whether stretching continues unusually long. Those are clues, not proof the leak caused anything. Don't toss the plant or blame male flowers just because you found a glowing stitch.

This is mainly a photoperiod flowering issue. Autoflowers don't rely on night length to start flower.
