How Much Weed Should One Indoor Plant Yield?
A starting benchmark for one indoor cannabis plant filling a well-lit two-by-two-foot growing area. You may get less, and you may get considerably more.

Why
How much does one cannabis plant yield? How many ounces of weed or bud should you expect per plant? This episode looks at indoor cannabis yield per plant using selected grow reports and published research.
So where does that number come from?
For this episode, I reviewed more than 150 grow reports, including reports from my workgroups, and compared the findings with published studies.
Among the reports of one plant in a two-by-two space, the average harvest was about five ounces of dried flower.
In a 2021 University of Guelph DWC study by Bevan and colleagues, the model's highest predicted average was about five ounces of dry flower per plant.
Karnoutsos and colleagues published a 2026 study in Horticulturae using multiple THC cannabis plants grown in rockwool. One group's yield was equivalent to about five and a half ounces over a two-by-two-foot area. Other groups produced more. That figure is for the growing area.
The grow reports are the basis for this starting benchmark. The studies provide context, but they don't establish an average for home growers.
For that two-by-two grow, four to six ounces gives you a starting point.
Outdoors, a plant with a full season and room to spread can get much larger and yield more than this indoor example.
In my own grows, I routinely harvest more than four to six ounces per plant, sometimes by a lot. The space and growing time still count.

In upcoming episodes, I'll show you what I do to help drive those numbers up, including how I approach lighting, training and nutrients, and what published research says about those choices.

What to remember
- Four to six ounces is a starting benchmark for the scoped indoor two-by-two example, not a guaranteed harvest or a ceiling.
- The grow reports provide the benchmark; the studies provide context, not an average for home growers.
- A modeled result per plant and a yield expressed per growing area are different kinds of evidence.
