Will Stronger Feed Grow Bigger Buds?

The answer: No.

Stronger feed doesn't guarantee a heavier harvest.

Why

Stronger feed doesn't guarantee a heavier harvest.

It's tempting to turn up the feed and expect bigger buds. But a plant tolerating stronger feed and a plant producing more flower are two different things.

Your EC meter isn't keeping score.

EC measures how well your solution conducts electricity. It helps track dissolved salts, but it doesn't tell you whether the nutrient balance is right, or whether a higher reading will improve your harvest.

In a 2025 closed hydroponic study of a high-CBD cannabis cultivar, researchers compared daily refill solutions, one with twice the EC of the other. They found no statistically significant increase in dry flower yield from the stronger feed.

Another 2025 cannabis study tested doubled feed strength in rockwool, under bright light and added CO2. Some stronger-feed treatments actually produced about 20 percent less dry flower.

Based on these results, don't increase EC just because you're hoping for a bigger harvest.

As the solution gets more concentrated, it can become harder for roots to take up water. That's osmotic stress. Stronger feed can become a source of stress instead of a yield advantage.

This doesn't mean starve your plants. Cannabis research in DWC has also found that getting nitrogen and phosphorus supply right matters for flower yield.

The goal is adequate, balanced nutrition. The ideal feed strength varies with the cultivar and growing conditions.

For DWC or RDWC, use a complete nutrient program intended for your system and growth stage. If growth is poor, check the recipe, pH and root condition before automatically adding more concentrate.

And healthy-looking leaves or unburned tips don't prove you've found the best feeding level.

My recommendation: follow a complete, balanced feeding program. Don't raise EC just to chase bigger buds.
