Does Defoliating Cannabis Actually Increase Yield?

The answer: Not reliably.

But that doesn't mean you should leave every leaf and branch alone.

Why

Defoliation removes fan leaves. Lollipopping is different: it removes lower branches, including their leaves and flower sites. A dense canopy can shade lower growth, so there are good reasons to manage it.

But more light below, or a bigger top bud, doesn't automatically mean more flower overall. One indoor study found lollipopping didn't produce significantly more total dry flower. Greenhouse studies found better light below and sometimes more even cannabinoid levels after defoliation, but no reliable gain in total dry flower. In fact, a newer indoor study found less flower biomass after defoliation in one cultivar.

So keep healthy leaves that are catching light. If a lower fan leaf stays buried in shade, it's reasonable to remove it, especially if it's crowding the canopy. If another leaf keeps covering a productive flower site, tuck it first, then remove it if it's still in the way. If an entire lower branch stays shaded, lollipopping can clear that growth. These are canopy choices, not proven ways to add grams. There's no magic day or percentage. Make each cut for a reason.

Judge the result by total dry, trimmed flower from comparable grows. A bigger top cola isn't the whole harvest.
